For over two centuries, scholars in Türkiye have produced a rich and sophisticated body of work across Islamic sciences and intellectual history. Yet this scholarship has remained insufficiently visible in global academic discourse, while Western and Orientalist studies have long circulated widely in Turkish translation. The Turkish Islamic Studies series (TISs) responds to this imbalance by introducing major works of Turkish Islamic scholarship to international readers through carefully supervised English translations. The series aims to foster a more reciprocal exchange of knowledge and to open Türkiye’s Islamic scholarly heritage to the world.
About this Volume
In Our Crises and His Other Writings, Said Halim Pasha offers a penetrating diagnosis of the intellectual, political, and social crises that shaped the late Ottoman world. From his critique of constitutionalism and uncritical Western imitation to his analysis of the “crisis of thought,” the work reveals deep tensions between Islamic intellectual tradition and modern transformations. The volume examines moral decline, social fragmentation, sectarian fanaticism, and the idea of Islamization as a comprehensive response to civilizational crisis—encompassing faith, morality, social order, and political life. This vision culminates in Said Halim Pasha’s reflections on the political structure of the Islamic state (al-Tashkīlāt al-Siyāsiyya fī al-Islām), where he compares Western and Islamic models of governance.Bringing together essays, political reflections, and personal testimonies, this volume stands as a major early twentieth-century attempt to rethink Islam, modernity, and civilizational continuity.
